What is Gum Disease?
It refers to a process that starts with an overgrowth of bacteria in your mouth that doesn’t get treated properly. It progresses to serious gum damage that has the potential to cause tooth and gum tissue loss.
What are Some Causes of Gum Disease?
About 30% of Americans are genetically predisposed to gum disease and could be 5 or more times likely to develop it than other people. Plaque is the main cause of gum disease, but other factors contribute to gum diseases as well. Poor oral hygiene, illnesses such as diabetes and cancer, certain medications, hormonal changes from menopause or pregnancy and smoking are all major causes.
What are The Symptoms of Gum Disease?
It’s easy for us to spot someone who’s suffering from gum disease. They’ll have gums that bleed easily and are swollen and tender, halitosis (chronic bad breath), a foul taste in the mouth, loose teeth with pockets next to the gums and changes in their bite.  Unfortunately, you may not realize that you’ve got an issue, so it’s important to see your dentist regularly so they can detect the first signs of periodontal diseases.
What are Some Ways to Treat Gum Disease?
Nothing beats regular dental cleanings for both preventative and restorative treatment for gum disease and other dental problems. When it comes to gum disease, a hygienist will take the first step and remove any plaque on your teeth. If the plaque is accumulated under the gum line or as deep as the root, we can perform non-surgical scaling and root planing to remove bacteria. For serious cases, there are periodontal surgery options such as flap surgery and bone grafts that we can offer.

How Can Gum Disease be Prevented?
As we said, never skip regular cleanings, which we recommend every six months. This is the best way to catch issues before they accelerate.  At home, make sure you exercise impeccable dental hygiene including proper brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily and using antiseptic mouthwash.  Eat healthful foods and, if you’re a smoker, we advise you to quit.

Let us evaluate you for gum disease. We’re located in: Beverly Hills and serve patients from West Hollywood, Beverly Glenn, Bel Air, Brentwood, Westwood, Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, Culver City, Marina Del Rey, Burbank and Hollywood.
