Dental Inlays and Onlays

What are Dental Inlays and Onlays?
They are a conservative alternative to complete crowns or fillings in the treatment of tooth decay and damage.  The procedure is called an inlay when the material is placed in the middle of the tooth and an onlay when the material extends to the cusps and/or biting surface.

What is The Onlay and Inlay Dental Procedure?
Just as required with a crown, you’ll need two visits to our office.  During the first visit, we’ll take impressions and X-rays and perform an exam.  You’ll be fitted with temporary materials.  We’ll then send the information to a dental lab to custom fabricate the inlay or onlay.  It will be fitted and secured on your second visit.

What Materials do Inlays and Onlays Come in?
While they’re always being updated and improved, currently porcelain or composite resin is most widely used.  These materials are easiest to use for matching your natural tooth color, therefore making them practically invisible.

What are the Benefits of a Dental Inlay or Onlay?
They tend to fit better and last longer than crowns or fillings because they’re typically stronger.  Because of this, they help prevent the need for more extensive treatments down the road.  They also look more natural, are less likely to discolor and have a better aesthetic value.  A dental inlay is a great choice for cavities between teeth because they seal teeth well and effectively keep bacteria out of the area.  An onlay can be used for protecting a weak area of the tooth without completely reshaping it, as you’d have to do for a crown.

Let’s discuss the possibility of dental inlays or onlays to improve your smile.  We’re located  in Beverly Hills and our clients come to us from West Hollywood, Beverly Glenn, Bel Air, Brentwood, Westwood, Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, Culver City, Marina Del Rey, Burbank and Hollywood.
